What is the Difference Between Therapy and Coaching?
Therapy focuses on the resolution of the past in order to free oneself from unconscious and destructive thoughts, feelings and behaviours and create new patterns. From a place of awareness, one can consciously make new decisions about oneself and live more effectively in the present. Emotional issues are often the focus of this internal work.
In coaching, the focus is on empowering individuals to be self-responsible and self-sufficient by encouraging independent decision-making. Emotional issues are addressed from an ‘in the present’ perspective. Self-awareness of values and personality style is fostered in order to reach a place of creatively choosing transformational ways of being in the world.
In a coach-client relationship, the client is responsible for doing the work while the coach is there to support and guide the client, keep the client accountable to the goals that have been set, and collaborate with the client in creating an individualized plan to compensate for their weaknesses. The client is the expert; the coach is the catalyst.
